Not All That Glitters is Fair – The True Cost of Jewelry

Jewelry has always symbolized love, beauty, and personal expression. It sparkles, it tells stories, it captures emotion. But behind that brilliance often lies a reality that’s far less beautiful.
Not all that glitters is fair.

According to a report by SOMO, colored gemstones like sapphires, rubies, and emeralds are frequently mined under unethical conditions. In developing countries, entire communities — including children — work long hours in dangerous mines for minimal pay, often exposed to toxic chemicals.

And it’s not just gemstones. Gold and silver mining, especially in small-scale operations, is often linked to child labor, exploitation, and severe environmental harm. Rivers are poisoned with mercury, forests disappear, and livelihoods are destroyed.

Even the so-called healing crystals, like rose quartz, carry a hidden cost. In Madagascar, families, including young children, work in unsafe mines to supply the global demand for “energy stones.” (Radar article)
